Toll and toll-free motorway sections in Slovakia

Last checked: 2 November 2026

You need the Slovakia vignette only on the designated sections of motorways and expressways marked by road signs. Not all motorways are tolled: since 1 August 2024 you can drive without a vignette on several sections around Bratislava, Košice and Nitra, for example. Class I, II and III roads do not require a vignette.

Who decides which sections are tolled

The network of designated sections is based on the Slovak Motorway Vignette Act No. 488/2013 Z. z. and implementing Decree No. 19/2016 Z. z. The sections that can be used free of charge are listed in Annex 1 to the decree. The list of toll sections is published by the National Motorway Company (NDS) as the toll collection administrator. On the road, the traffic signs are decisive.

Temporarily exempted sections

In the NDS list, two sections are marked as temporarily exempted from the toll: D1 Poprad-Východ – Spišský Štvrtok (12 km) and D2 Brodské (SK/CZ border) – Kúty (5 km). As this is a temporary arrangement, please check it on the current map before your journey.

Toll-free sections since 1 August 2024

Since 1 August 2024 several city bypasses and motorway sections have been exempted from the toll, for example:

  • D2 Stupava – Bratislava, Jarovce (22 km) – crossing Bratislava on the D2,
  • D4 Bratislava, Jarovce – Bratislava, Rača (27 km) – the Bratislava bypass,
  • D1 Košice-Sever – Rozhanovce (6 km) – near Košice,
  • R1 Nitra-Západ – Nitra-Východ (12 km) – the Nitra bypass.

Watch out for the adjoining sections: the D4 from the Austrian border to the Bratislava-Jarovce junction (2 km) and the D2 from Jarovce to the Hungarian border at Čunovo (9 km), for example, are tolled. What this means when arriving from abroad is explained in the guide Slovakia vignette at border crossings.

Official map

Before your journey, compare your route with the toll map on eznamka.sk in the toll sections area (Spoplatnené úseky – Sieť). Toll sections are marked in light blue on the map and are also listed below it. The map is for information only; the road signs on site are binding.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a vignette to drive through Bratislava?

Not on the D2 between Stupava and Jarovce or on the D4 between Jarovce and Rača. The sections D2 Jarovce – Čunovo, D4 Jarovce – Austrian border and R7 Bratislava-Juh – Holice, however, are tolled.

Do I have to pay on Class I roads?

No. The toll applies only to the designated, signposted sections of motorways and expressways.

What if I enter a toll section by mistake?

The vignette must be paid for before entering. According to NDS, you can still buy it afterwards in that case, by midnight of the same day at the latest – the sooner the better. More in the guide Fine for driving without a vignette in Slovakia.

Is one vignette valid on the whole network?

Yes. A valid vignette covers all toll sections, regardless of the number of journeys and kilometres.

You can order the electronic Slovakia vignette online with us: choose the validity and start day, enter the licence plate and pay. You will receive the confirmation by e-mail.
