Slovakia vignette when arriving from neighbouring countries

Last checked: 2 November 2026

At some border crossings the toll section begins right at the border: on the D4 at Jarovce (from Austria), on the D2 at Čunovo and on the R4 at Milhosť (from Hungary) and on the D3 at Skalité (from Poland). You therefore need to have paid for the Slovakia vignette before crossing the border. Elsewhere, the road continues toll-free after the border, and the vignette is only needed when you enter one of the toll sections.

Why buy the vignette before the border

Under the Slovak Motorway Vignette Act No. 488/2013 Z. z., the driver must have paid for the vignette before entering a toll section. The camera system of the Slovak National Motorway Company (NDS) records licence plates regardless of the country of registration. If the toll section begins immediately after the border, you will have no opportunity to buy the vignette before entering it. You can set the start date up to 60 days in advance, so you can arrange the vignette at home.

From Austria

Kittsee – Jarovce (D4): the section D4 Jarovce (SK/AT border) – Bratislava-Jarovce (D2/D4 junction) is tolled and 2 km long. The toll begins right at the border. At the Jarovce junction it connects to the tolled D2 towards Čunovo and to the toll-free D2 towards Stupava and D4 towards Rača.

From Hungary

  • Rajka – Čunovo (D2): the section D2 Čunovo (SK/HU border) – Bratislava-Jarovce (D2/D4 junction) is tolled and 9 km long. The toll begins right at the border. Continuing through Bratislava on the D2 towards Stupava and on the D4 towards Rača has been toll-free since 1 August 2024; the D2 from Stupava towards Kúty and the R7 Bratislava-Juh – Holice, however, are tolled.
  • Komárom – Komárno: the list of toll sections contains no section starting at this crossing. You only need a vignette if you later enter a toll section, for example the D1 or the R1.
  • Parassapuszta – Šahy: here too, no toll section begins after the border. Only some sections of the R1 and R2 expressways are tolled, for example around Zvolen and Žiar nad Hronom.
  • Tornyosnémeti – Milhosť (R4): the section R4 Milhosť – Košice-Šebastovce is tolled and 14 km long. The toll begins at the border.

From Czechia

  • Brodské (D2): according to the NDS list, the section D2 Brodské (SK/CZ border) – Kúty (5 km) is temporarily exempted from the toll. The following section, D2 Kúty – Stupava (44 km), is tolled. Anyone continuing on the D2 to Bratislava or further to Hungary needs a vignette.
  • Continuing on the D1: the D1 motorway is tolled from Bratislava-Východ to Hričovské Podhradie (172 km) and on further sections towards Žilina, Poprad, Prešov and Košice.
  • Púchov (R6): the short section R6 Púchov – Beluša-Sever (2 km) is tolled.

From Poland

Skalité (D3): the section D3 Skalité (SK/PL border) – Čadca, Bukov is tolled and 21 km long. The toll begins right at the border. If you continue via Žilina onto the D1, you will use further toll sections.

From Ukraine

Vyšné Nemecké: the list of toll sections contains no section starting at this crossing. You need a vignette when entering one of the toll sections, for example the D1 around Košice and Prešov (Rozhanovce – Bidovce, Prešov-Juh – Košice-Sever) or the R4 Košice-Šebastovce – Milhosť.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a vignette for transit from Austria to Hungary via Jarovce?

Yes. The D4 from the Austrian border to the Jarovce junction and the D2 from Jarovce to the Hungarian border at Čunovo are both tolled.

Do I have to pay when arriving from Komárom or Parassapuszta?

No toll section begins after the border. You need a vignette once you enter a tolled motorway or expressway.

Should I buy the vignette before my journey?

Yes, we recommend it. At several crossings the toll section begins right at the border, and the vignette must be paid for before entering it.

Which vignette is suitable for transit?

For a transit within one day, the 1-day vignette for €8.10 is sufficient. If you return on a different day within ten days, the 10-day vignette for €10.80 is better value. More in the guide Which Slovakia vignette to choose.
